WELCOME TO CULTURE SOUTH EAST'S WEBSITE
Culture South East is the regional cultural consortium for the South East of England.
Our main objective is to champion cultural and creative interests in the region. We aim to do this by:
- Promoting collaboration within the cultural sector
- Highlighting the way in which culture can contribute towards the achievement of regional and local policy priorities
- Celebrating the way in which the cultural sector is enhancing quality of life in the region
We are sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport DCMS and have a funding agreement with them which sets out our agreed priorities and targets within the South East region.
Our small executive team is based in the offices of the Government Office for the South East in Guildford. We have a Board of Directors which is drawn from key cultural agencies and partners at a senior level across the region. We also work with consultants to extend our capacity.
July 2008: Culture Minister Margaret Hodge has announced plans to change the ways the DCMS works in the regions, replacing the Regional Cultural Consortiums with a partnership between Arts Council England, Sport England, English Heritage and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Culture South East, the regional cultural consortium in the South East, recognises that the time is right for this new approach and will work to ensure a smooth transition during this time. Further details are on our News pages.
August 2008: Legacy Trust UK has given the go ahead for the first activities and events designed to build a cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Games. ACCENTUATE - the South East's project is designed to encourage disabled people in the South East to experience new activities and enjoy physical activity. The ground-breaking project, inspired by the paralympic movement, will promote new ways of thinking, doing and being - where disabled people of all ages can access real opportunities. Further details are on our News pages.
The Cultural Olympiad is a four-year cultural celebration across the UK running from September 2008 until the end of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It launches over the weekend of 26-28 September. From 11 March 2008 projects wishing to be considered for inclusion in the Cultural Olympiad can submit an application for the Inspire mark - see our Cultural Olympiad Be Inspired News item for details of this.
The LAA Culture and Sport Toolkit developed to support LSPs to understand the contribution of culture and sport to community life has been launched, and is available at www.seco.org.uk/laatoolkit
